As world leaders converged on Évian-les-Bains, France, for the G7 summit, Prime Minister Keir Starmer reaffirmed the UK's unwavering commitment to supporting Ukraine in its fight against Russia. In a decisive move aimed at crippling Moscow's financial backbone and bolstering Kyiv's resilience, Starmer announced plans to introduce new sanctions targeting Russia's shadow fleet of oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers, with over 600 vessels set to be affected.
The measures are designed to disrupt Russia's lucrative energy trade, while also tackling a state-linked network involved in covertly acquiring Western technology for its military. This move comes on the heels of British troops seizing a Russian shadow fleet oil tanker in the English Channel earlier this year.
In a significant boost to Ukraine's energy security, Starmer pledged £210 million over two years to support the country's nuclear power plants, facilitating the supply of enriched uranium from Urenco – a multinational uranium enrichment company with 33% UK government ownership. Notably, a third of the uranium content will originate from Urenco's Chester plant, supporting British jobs and exports.
Starmer is set to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the summit, which also addresses broader geopolitical issues, including efforts to solidify wavering US support for Ukraine. The G7 will also tackle defence spending commitments, with Starmer expected to reassure former US President Donald Trump that the UK remains committed to increasing its defence outlays.
The Prime Minister's firm stance on Ukraine comes as his government navigates domestic challenges and potential international pressure over recent policy announcements, including a proposed social media ban for under-16s – a move reportedly at odds with White House advice. Meanwhile, anti-G7 protests in Geneva saw clashes between demonstrators and police, resulting in property damage.
