Celebrated author Stephen King has shared his high regard for the new Apple TV+ drama, 'Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed', suggesting it surpasses the recently popular 'Widow's Bay'. King, known for his prolific horror and suspense novels, took to social media to express his views, offering a significant endorsement for the emerging series.
King's comments, posted on X (formerly Twitter), specifically praised 'Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed' as being 'even better' than 'Widow's Bay', a show that itself has garnered considerable attention and has been renewed for a second season. 'Widow's Bay', starring Matthew Rhys as a New England island mayor navigating unusual events, has often been noted for its King-esque influences. However, the author's preference now clearly leans towards the newer offering.
In his commendation, King drew a striking comparison for 'Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed', stating it was 'like Hitchcock came back to do it one more time'. He particularly lauded the performance of lead actress Tatiana Maslany, noting, 'The play of emotions on her face is pretty incredible. She goes from comic to terror in an instant.' He further emphasised his admiration for Maslany's talent, later adding, 'Whatever they're paying her, it's not enough.'
'Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed' centres on Paula, played by Maslany, a recently divorced woman embroiled in a custody battle who believes she witnesses a crime, subsequently becoming entangled in a complex mystery. The series, which premiered on 20 May, was created by David J. Rosen, known for his work on 'Us & Them', the American adaptation of the popular British sitcom 'Gavin & Stacey'.
The show has already received strong critical acclaim, achieving a 93 per cent 'fresh' rating on Rotten Tomatoes, indicating widespread positive reviews. King's public endorsement is likely to further boost its profile, drawing in viewers who trust his discerning taste in suspense and storytelling. His regular sharing of media recommendations on social media often influences a broad audience.
