Stephen King's 'Different Seasons' Banned from Utah Public Schools

A collection of Stephen King novellas, 'Different Seasons', has been removed from all public school libraries across Utah. The book, which includes stories that inspired 'Stand by Me' and 'The Shawshank Redemption', was deemed to contain 'objective sensitive material' under state law.

  • Utah has banned Stephen King's 'Different Seasons' from all public school libraries statewide.
  • The collection was removed after multiple school districts judged it to contain 'objective sensitive material'.
  • Utah law defines 'objective sensitive material' as content that is pornographic, indecent, or harmful to minors.
  • The American Civil Liberties Union of Utah has filed a lawsuit against the state over its book bans, citing constitutional concerns.

A row over literary content has reached a new level in Utah, where acclaimed author Stephen King's 'Different Seasons' collection has been banned from all public school libraries across the state. The move affects students in grades seven to twelve, who previously had access to the 1982 publication featuring four novellas, including those which inspired the films 'Stand by Me' and 'The Shawshank Redemption'.

The affected novellas within the collection are 'Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption: Hope Springs Eternal', 'Apt Pupil: Summer of Corruption', 'The Body: Fall from Innocence', and 'The Breathing Method: A Winter’s Tale'. According to Utah state law, a book is removed from all public schools if at least three school districts or a combination of two districts and five charter schools deem it contains “objective sensitive material”. This includes content deemed pornographic, indecent or harmful to minors.

Under the Utah code, instructional content falls under “sensitive material” if it includes certain fondling or other erotic touching. The decision to remove 'Different Seasons' follows initial actions by the Davis, Jordan, Tooele, and Washington school districts in July. As of 15 July 2026, a total of 35 books are listed on the Utah State Board of Education's official banned titles, including 'The Perks of Being a Wallflower'.

Why this matters: This story highlights the ongoing debate in the United States over censorship in education and the extent of parental and state authority in dictating accessible materials for students. It reflects a broader cultural conflict regarding freedom of expression versus the protection of minors.

What this means for you: What this means for you: While this specific ban is in the US, it reflects a global trend of discussions around content accessibility and censorship in educational settings, which can influence similar debates and policy considerations in the UK.
