Swansea City has agreed to an eight-figure bid from fellow Championship club Stoke City for Northern Ireland international midfielder Ethan Galbraith. The transfer, which is also anticipated to include potential add-ons, is set to see the 25-year-old move to the Potteries after just one year with the Welsh club. Galbraith is scheduled to undergo a medical on Tuesday, signalling a swift conclusion to the negotiations.
Galbraith, who is also capable of playing at right-back, made a considerable impact at Swansea since his arrival from Leyton Orient for £1.5 million. He was a consistent performer, featuring in 44 appearances and scoring four goals last season, often playing in a less familiar defensive role on the right flank. His strong performances had led Swansea to express a desire to secure him on a new long-term contract this summer.
However, sources within Swansea City have indicated that Galbraith made it clear he was not prepared to sign a new deal, despite his current contract running until 2028 with an option for a further 12 months. The club has consequently opted to sanction his departure rather than compelling him to remain, allowing them to capitalise on the significant transfer fee.
The news represents a considerable setback for Swansea's head coach, Vitor Matos. Matos had previously highlighted Galbraith's importance to the team, stating in April that he hoped the midfielder would stay at the club for a decade. His departure will undoubtedly necessitate adjustments to Matos's squad planning ahead of the new season.
For Stoke City, the acquisition of Galbraith marks a notable investment and a clear statement of intent as they look to strengthen their squad. The move highlights the competitive nature of the Championship transfer market, with clubs willing to spend substantial sums to secure key talent. It also underscores the financial considerations that often drive player movements, even when players are under long-term contracts.
