Stormont Speaker Edwin Poots has delivered a scathing condemnation of former DUP leader Jeffrey Donaldson, following his conviction for 18 child sex offences. The convictions, which include rape, were committed against two women when they were children – a devastating reminder that the abuse perpetrated by those in positions of power can have long-lasting and far-reaching consequences.
The Lord Speaker quoted the Bible, saying it would be better if a millstone was put around Donaldson's neck and he was cast into the depth of the sea, a stark reference to the severity with which society views those who harm children. Poots also echoed widespread concerns about Donaldson's actions, accusing him of repeatedly lying over the years, forcing his victims to relive their trauma and face accusations of dishonesty.
Meanwhile, tributes have poured in for the brave women who brought Donaldson to justice, with Poots paying testament to their honesty, resilience, strength, and integrity. It is a testament to the enduring impact of childhood trauma that these women found the courage to come forward, despite the immense difficulties they faced.
As a result of his conviction, all parties in the Northern Ireland Assembly have spoken out against Donaldson, describing him as a 'fraudulent monster' who abused positions of trust and power by committing child sex abuse. They have called for Donaldson to be stripped of his knighthood and removed from membership of the Privy Council.
Lisburn and Castlereagh City Council has also taken swift action, removing photographs featuring Jeffrey Donaldson from display in its facilities. A spokesperson explained that this decision was made in accordance with their rules, which state that individuals found guilty of serious criminal offences or ordered to sign the Sex Offenders Register will have their membership terminated with immediate effect.
