Keerthana Krishnadas, a recent graduate, opted for a second-hand dress and paid just £80. She believes that thrifting is a great way to save money, as the outfit is only worn once. In contrast, Ehis Oboh designed and made his own suit, which was created by his tailor brother in Nigeria.

According to Tom Allingham from Save The Student, students are often the least financially resilient at graduation time, with the maintenance loan falling short of living costs by an average of £502 per month. This means that many students rely on parental support, part-time jobs, and debt to make ends meet.
The cost of renting a cap and gown varies between universities, with prices starting at £42 for undergraduates and postgraduates at the University of Salford and increasing to £57 for PhD students. Official photographs can also be expensive, with prices ranging from £30 to £350.
