Substitute Bank Holidays to Create Extended Christmas Break in 2027

Substitute bank holidays in late December 2027 and early January 2028 will allow for an extended break around Christmas and New Year.

  • Christmas Day and Boxing Day in 2027 fall on a weekend, leading to substitute bank holidays on Monday 27 December and Tuesday 28 December.
  • New Year's Day 2028 falls on a Saturday, with a substitute holiday on Monday 3 January 2028.
  • Taking three days of annual leave (29, 30, 31 December 2027) could result in 10 consecutive days off.

Many individuals on a routine Monday to Friday work pattern could benefit from an extended break around Christmas and New Year in 2027 and 2028 due to substitute bank holidays.

In 2027, Christmas Day and Boxing Day fall on a weekend. This means that substitute bank holidays will be observed on Monday 27 December and Tuesday 28 December.

Additionally, New Year's Day in 2028 falls on a Saturday, resulting in a substitute bank holiday on Monday 3 January 2028.

The government website states that if a bank holiday is on a weekend, a substitute weekday, normally the following Monday, becomes a bank holiday.

What this means for you: Booking three days of annual leave on 29, 30, and 31 December 2027 could result in 10 days off, from 25 December to 3 January.
