Approximately 50 primary school pupils from Sudbury, Suffolk, received the surprise of a lifetime when their planned school excursion to London culminated in a face-to-face meeting with Hollywood actor Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson. The Year 3 and 4 students from St Gregory Primary School were under the impression they were embarking on a conventional 'old-fashioned' trip to the capital on Tuesday, only to discover they would be attending an exclusive 'Moana Experience'.
This immersive event, held at Potters Field Park beside the River Thames, was organised in anticipation of the forthcoming live-action adaptation of Disney's popular 2016 film, 'Moana'. Johnson, who voices the character of Maui in the original animated movie and is reprising his role in the new production, personally greeted the children, much to their delight.
The extraordinary encounter was the result of a collaborative effort between Disney and the school's headteacher, Daniel Woodrow. Their partnership stemmed from a social media video created by the pupils in January, expressing their excitement for the new 'Moana' film and hoping to catch Johnson's eye. Mr Woodrow had initially promised the children an end-of-year trip to see the film if their video successfully reached the former WWE star.
The video quickly achieved viral status, capturing Johnson's attention. He responded with a four-minute video message, pledging to hire out a cinema for the pupils, their friends, and families to watch the film, and even offered to cover the cost of their sweets and snacks. Johnson expressed how 'moved' and 'cool' he found their attempt to contact him, concluding his message with Maui's iconic line, 'You're welcome'.
Speaking at the event, Mr Woodrow highlighted the significance of the occasion. He told the BBC, "For the biggest movie star on the planet to spend so much time with the children... that was incredible, and you could see how excited they were." He added that Johnson wished one child a happy birthday and filmed a video with them, meaning "the children have all been in a movie with Dwayne Johnson now, which is incredible." The element of surprise, with children having no prior knowledge of the meeting, made the day even more memorable.
The event underscores the power of social media in connecting public figures with their fans and demonstrates a heartwarming gesture from a global celebrity. It provided a unique and unforgettable experience for the young pupils, far exceeding the expectations of a typical school outing.
