Stargazers across the United Kingdom are once again being treated to the familiar celestial spectacle of the Summer Triangle, which has now ascended high into the northern night sky. Composed of three of the brightest stars visible from our hemisphere – Vega, Deneb, and Altair – this unofficial asterism is a highly anticipated annual marker of the season and one of the simplest patterns for amateur astronomers to locate.
Although not recognised as an official constellation by the International Astronomical Union, the Summer Triangle is a distinctive and easily identifiable grouping. As of 27 July 2026, observers in London looking high towards the south-east at around 11pm UK time will find the triangle almost directly overhead, a position that will continue to climb higher as the evening progresses throughout the week.
The brightest of the trio is Vega, a brilliant white star nestled within the constellation Lyra, the lyre. From the UK, Vega often appears almost directly above during summer evenings. North-east of Vega lies Deneb, the brightest star in Cygnus, the swan. Completing the triangle, and positioned lower in the south-east, is Altair, which shines brightly in the constellation Aquila, the eagle.
Beyond its individual brilliance, the Summer Triangle serves as a celestial frame for a breathtaking cosmic feature: the northern Milky Way. For those fortunate enough to observe from a location free from significant light pollution, the Milky Way reveals itself as a faint, ethereal band of light stretching across the sky. This luminous streak is, in fact, the combined light of billions of stars that form the more expansive regions of our home galaxy.
While most prominent in the northern hemisphere, the Summer Triangle is also visible from the southern hemisphere, though it appears in their northern sky and does not ascend as high. For keen observers in the UK, even a simple pair of binoculars can significantly enhance the experience, allowing for a closer look at the rich and diverse star fields contained within the triangle's boundaries, offering a deeper appreciation of our galactic neighbourhood.
