Suspected crime boss Daniel Kinahan is due to be extradited to Ireland within weeks, according to BBC News NI. He was arrested in Dubai in April under a warrant issued by Irish courts and has since fought extradition attempts.
His appeals have been unsuccessful, and Gardaí (Irish police) anticipate that authorities in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) will quickly sign his extradition, formally starting the process. Bringing Mr Kinahan back to Ireland is expected to involve a major security operation between the Gardaí and the Irish Defence Forces.
The US government imposed sanctions on Mr Kinahan in April 2022, identifying him and other family members as leaders of the Kinahan organised crime cartel. He is expected to face Irish courts in the coming weeks, where authorities are anticipated to prosecute him for his alleged involvement in leading an organised crime group.
An extradition agreement exists between the UAE and Ireland, which was previously used to extradite Sean McGovern, described as a "senior lieutenant" in the same organised crime group. Mr McGovern was sentenced to 24 years in prison last month for directing criminal activities.
