Sussex all-rounder James Coles has secured his first call-up to the England squad, set to feature in next month's Twenty20 International series against India. The 22-year-old's inclusion marks a significant milestone in his burgeoning career, which has seen him deliver a series of standout performances across various cricket formats recently.
Coles, a versatile left-arm spinner, has consistently batted in the top three for Sussex in this year's Vitality Blast competition, showcasing his capabilities as a potent 'three-dimensional' white-ball talent. His profile received a considerable boost earlier this year when he attracted the highest bid of £390,000 at the inaugural Hundred player auction, securing a place with London Spirit. He also recently represented Andrew Flintoff's England Lions squad in a match against South Africa, further cementing his reputation.
The expanded 17-strong squad for the five-match series, which is scheduled to commence in Durham just two days after the anticipated conclusion of England's third Test against New Zealand, reflects a strategic approach to player management. With six members of the T20 squad also involved in the Test series, national selector Marcus North indicated that player rotation is expected to mitigate potential workload issues.
Marcus North commented on Coles's selection, stating, "James Coles is an exciting addition and has earned his place following his performances with the England Lions and in T20 competitions here and abroad during the past 12 months." He further explained the rationale behind the larger squad: "We have selected a larger squad to accommodate for the fact that this series will begin shortly after the Test series against New Zealand is due to conclude which allows us to be flexible."
Other notable inclusions in the squad are Jordan Cox and Sonny Baker, who both made their Test debuts last week, alongside Saqid Mahmood, who returns to the England setup after his last appearance against India in January 2025. However, pace bowlers Brydon Carse and Jamie Overton will miss the series as they continue their recovery from wrist and thigh injuries, respectively, sustained during their participation in the Indian Premier League. Ben Duckett, who served as the spare batter for England during the T20 World Cup earlier this year, has been omitted from the squad. England reached the semi-finals of that tournament before being defeated by eventual champions India.
