With 95% of votes counted in the Swedish election, the left-leaning opposition bloc, led by Magdalena Andersson’s Social Democrats, has widened its lead to three seats. The bloc currently holds 176 seats compared to the reigning centre-right coalition and their far-right partners, the Sweden Democrats, who have 173 seats.
The formal result is not yet settled, as approximately 28,600 votes separate the two blocs. Around 6% of the total votes are still to be counted, with about 200,000 votes expected to be tallied on Wednesday. Despite this, Swedish public broadcaster SVT stated it was 90% confident the opposition would secure victory.
The process of forming a new government could take weeks or months. The parliament is scheduled to meet on September 28 to elect a new speaker, with any votes for a new prime minister to follow.
