A 61-year-old Swedish man has received a prison sentence of four years and five months after being found guilty of coercing his wife into providing sexual services to over 120 men. The court in Härnösand, on Sweden's eastern coast, determined that the man controlled his wife using threats of violence and by installing security cameras within their home.

The man, whose identity has not been publicly disclosed, was convicted of a range of offences including attempted rape, aggravated pimping, assault, and unlawful threats. Prosecutors detailed how he began forcing his wife into these acts for payment in 2022, continuing until she reported him to the police in October 2025. The court dismissed eight counts of rape, citing an inability to establish involuntary participation in those specific instances.

During the trial, prosecutors presented evidence that the man plied his wife with drugs and exploited the isolated location of their farm in Kramfors, her limited social network, and the pervasive surveillance cameras. He also allegedly threatened to kill her, burn her, and cut off her fingers. The woman eventually managed to escape using a blind spot in the camera coverage before alerting authorities.

In addition to the primary conviction, 28 other men were found guilty of purchasing sexual services from the woman, collectively accounting for 56 transactions. Two of these men were handed prison sentences, while the remaining 26 received suspended sentences or probation. The court also ordered the convicted husband to pay his wife 200,000 Swedish Krona, equivalent to approximately £15,900, in damages.

This case has drawn significant international attention, with some observers drawing parallels to the Dominique Pelicot case in France, where a man was found to have drugged his then-wife and facilitated her rape by other men over an extended period. The Swedish man consistently denied any wrongdoing, asserting that he merely helped organise consensual encounters. However, the court sided with the prosecution, concluding that he had "ruthlessly exploited" the woman.

Why this matters: This case highlights the severe issue of domestic abuse and coercion, echoing concerns globally about hidden exploitation. For UK citizens, it serves as a stark reminder of the prevalence of such crimes and the importance of international cooperation in combating them.

What this means for you: What this means for you: While this specific case occurred in Sweden, it underscores the global nature of exploitation and the importance of vigilance and support networks. The UK Foreign Office advises British nationals travelling or residing abroad to be aware of local laws and to report any concerns about abuse or exploitation to local authorities or the British Embassy.
