Scottish 50m breaststroke record holder Archie Goodburn, 25, competed in a Commonwealth Games final on Monday, just over two years after being diagnosed with inoperable brain cancer. Goodburn, who was 22 at the time of his diagnosis, received news of three 'low grade' tumours that had spread through his brain.
Despite his diagnosis, Goodburn qualified fifth fastest for the 50m breaststroke final and finished joint seventh. He had previously lowered the national record to 27.12 seconds in February.
Goodburn has been vocal about the need for brain cancer research, stating that one of his dreams is to see a future where brain cancer is not the biggest killer of patients under 40. He advocates for extending his own life and for other young patients.
