Jamshedpur FC, an Indian Super League (ISL) club, has been withdrawn by its owner, Tata Steel. The decision, announced on July 31, has been met with protests from fans and pleas for reconsideration from players and figures such as Indian football legend Sunil Chhetri.
Tata Steel's vice-president and the club's chairman, Sundara Ramam, stated the decision was not financially motivated. He said the resources previously allocated to the club would be reinvested in grassroots sports development, and the company's sports budget would continue to grow.
However, a member of Jamshedpur's staff suggested the withdrawal was due to concerns over the ISL's new club-led financial model. This model, which came into effect after Reliance Industries' commercial partnership with the All India Football Federation (AIFF) expired in 2025, requires clubs to take on commercial and marketing responsibilities, including an initial payment of around £43,000 from each of the 14 clubs by July 31.
The withdrawal of Jamshedpur FC is not an isolated incident, following Reliance's departure from its central role and City Football Group leaving Mumbai City in December. Baljit Rihal of Inventive Sports noted that these departures collectively represent a significant loss of confidence in the professional game, raising fears that other clubs might follow suit.
