New government plans for education in England will enable pupils to study technical subjects such as manufacturing and AI from age 14, alongside their core academic learning. The government stated that these courses, available from Year 10, would be connected to local jobs and industries.
Prime Minister Andy Burnham said the government is delivering a "major shake-up" to address the youth unemployment crisis in Britain, starting with improving the availability and quality of technical education. He added that students would gain skills training, work experience, and connections with employers.
The announcement follows data published earlier this year showing over one million young people across the UK were not in education, employment, or training (Neet), marking the highest level in more than 12 years. School leaders' unions welcomed the ambition but sought clarity on implementation, timing, and funding.
Education Secretary Lucy Powell said the announcement "marks the start of a real shared effort with employers, businesses, mayors and councils to design an education system that connects young people to jobs and careers in their local area."
