A Grantham cake shop owner has been left 'soul-destroying' after a young thief was captured on CCTV making an offensive gesture while stealing £150 worth of goods from an honesty box. The incident occurred in the early hours of Monday, prompting the owner to reconsider the viability of his trust-based sales system.
Lee McCann, who owns Mum Made Meals, operates an honesty box system where customers are relied upon to pay for baked goods stored in an unlocked shed. He stated that the theft, carried out by a boy understood to be of secondary school age, has had a 'brutal' financial and emotional impact on his small business, which employs ten staff.
McCann highlighted the significant financial blow, explaining that with most products priced at £3.50 or £4, £150 represents a substantial amount of stock. He emphasised the tight margins in the business, stating that such a loss is 'devastating' for a small family-run enterprise, impacting staff wages and the cost of produce.
Following the incident, McCann shared details on social media, leading to a 'phenomenal' community response. The mother of the alleged thief subsequently contacted the business, offering to pay for the stolen items. However, Lincolnshire Police are still investigating the case, with the mother reportedly keen for her son to face consequences for his actions.
The theft is the latest in a series of similar honesty box crimes reported across Lincolnshire. Just a fortnight prior, a donation box for donkey carrots was stolen in Burgh-Le-Marsh. In May, a Spalding-based cake business discovered a customer had taken £80 worth of goods without payment. Additionally, locals in Boston recently rallied together after a farmer selling potatoes from a farm gate had 218 sacks stolen.
In response to the recurring issues, Mum Made Meals is now exploring alternative sales methods, including a vending machine system. McCann believes this would 'make it a lot less accessible to steal from,' and some regular customers have even offered financial support to help fund the new initiative.
