Cheers erupted in a Northamptonshire housing estate as a solar eclipse began during a watch party organised by 14-year-old Aston Smith. The teenage astronomer set up telescopes and provided homemade viewers for neighbours on his Overston estate.
Aston gave away 400 pairs of eclipse glasses and led children in experiments to measure lux levels and temperature during the partial eclipse. He estimated that 93.5% of the sun was covered from his viewing position.
The event, which saw hundreds of people attend, also raised over £400 for UK Astronomy. Aston's mother, Lyndsay Smith, noted that neighbours treated her son like a "local celebrity" and asked for autographs.
