A teenage boy was rescued in the Bering Sea after spending days clinging to a capsized fishing vessel. His older brother and cousin drowned in the incident, which occurred after their 18ft boat overturned.
The group had departed Alaska's St Lawrence Island on Friday and were expected to return by early Sunday. When they failed to appear, the coast guard initiated a search on Sunday evening. An aircrew located the sole survivor on top of the overturned vessel on Monday afternoon.
Rescuers provided a raft and survival equipment, coordinating with the nearby vessel Northwest Explorer to bring the teen to safety. He was reportedly suffering from symptoms of hypothermia.
R Adm Bob Little, commander of the Arctic district, expressed condolences for the loss of the two mariners and thanked those involved in the rescue. Darren Toolie-Noongwook, a brother of the survivor, identified him as Parker and stated that the boat's motor had become entangled in a fishing line before the vessel flipped in bad weather. The bodies of the two victims have been recovered.
