A British teenager's carefree 2013 holiday turned into a nightmare for hosts in Sicily after a group of 20 16-year-olds took over a rented villa, disrupting the elderly family who lived on-site and sparking police intervention. The incident has left a lasting impression on all involved.
The villa's remote location, over an hour's walk from the nearest village, made the hosts - Pablo and his elderly parents - responsible for airport transfers, supermarket trips and dealing with the group's misbehaviour.
Police were called to the property after complaints about excessive noise and underage drinking. The teenagers' late-night parties continued despite warnings from Pablo, who had also to intervene when two of them tried to rent motorbikes with provisional licences.
A particularly disturbing incident saw intoxicated teenagers sprawling across the garden and poolside, while another involved a midnight swim followed by a bout of nausea that left one of the elderly parents feeling traumatised. The final straw came when the group handed Pablo a paltry tip of loose change for their 'traumatic time' at his family's home.
The incident highlights the potential for cultural clashes and misunderstandings when young holidaymakers are unchaperoned and unprepared for independent travel, particularly in shared accommodation settings. It also serves as a reminder to both property owners and young travellers of the importance of clear communication, respecting local customs and demonstrating consideration for hosts and neighbours.
