British tennis sensation Hannah Klugman, aged just 17, has achieved a significant career milestone by claiming her inaugural victory on the WTA Tour at the Nottingham Open. The highly-rated teenager overcame compatriot Harriet Dart in a compelling first-round match, winning 6-2, 6-4, despite initially losing in the qualifying rounds.
Klugman's entry into the main draw came as a 'lucky loser' following the withdrawal of fellow Briton Katie Boulter. Ranked 509th in the world, Klugman capitalised on her unexpected opportunity with a dominant performance against the 152nd-ranked Dart. Her serve was particularly impressive, featuring six aces and no double faults, and she won 77% of her first-serve points, demonstrating composure beyond her years.
Reflecting on her unexpected journey, Klugman shared, "I was at home [in Wimbledon] this morning after losing on Sunday. Everyone was telling me I had to drive up at 5am, so it's been a long day." She added, "Because I lost [in qualifying] I had to take this chance, I had to give it my all. I didn't want to play with any fear or have any regrets. I'm so proud to get my first win today."
Klugman, who has already been granted a wildcard for the Wimbledon main draw, has been a prominent figure in junior tennis. She first gained international attention by winning the prestigious Orange Bowl junior championships in Florida at 13. Her junior career also saw her become the first Briton in almost 50 years to reach the French Open girls' final in 2025, and she has contested two Grand Slam girls' doubles finals at Wimbledon in 2023 and the 2025 Australian Open.
After a strong first set, Klugman faced a brief challenge in the second, falling 4-2 behind. However, she quickly regained her composure, reeling off four consecutive games to secure the straight-sets victory. She is now the only Briton to progress to the second round in Nottingham, where she will face the tough challenge of fourth seed Marie Bouzkova. Fellow Briton Alicia Dudeney, also a Wimbledon main-draw wildcard recipient, was defeated 6-4, 7-6 (7-2) by Ukraine's Dayana Yastremska.
This win is a clear indicator of Klugman's potential as she transitions from the junior circuit to the senior professional ranks, providing a significant boost to British tennis hopes.
