Tributes have been paid to Tadhg Callaghan Carter, a 15-year-old who tragically died after being struck by a car during the Donegal International Rally on Saturday. The incident occurred shortly before 5 pm local time in Trentagh, near Kilmacrennan, involving a vehicle participating in the prestigious motorsport event.
Tadhg was immediately taken to Letterkenny University Hospital but was later pronounced dead. Two other spectators also sustained injuries in the incident and were transported to the same hospital, though their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening. In a mark of profound respect, organisers made the decision to cancel the remainder of the three-day rally following the fatality.
Gardaí, the Irish police force, have launched an appeal for witnesses, specifically those who were present at 'Location 15 on Special Stage 12 Gartan'. They are particularly interested in reviewing any mobile phone or dashcam footage captured in the area at the time of the incident to assist with their ongoing investigation. Motorsport Ireland, the governing body for motorsport in the country, is also conducting its own investigation into the circumstances.
Tadhg had recently completed his Junior Cert examinations at St Eunan's College in Letterkenny and was preparing to enter fifth year in September. In a statement, the school expressed their "profound sadness" at his loss, describing him as a "deeply valued and popular member of our school community." They extended their heartfelt condolences to Tadhg's family, friends, and teachers, promising support for the school community in the difficult days ahead.
The Donegal International Rally is one of the largest motorsport events on the island of Ireland. This fatality marks the first at the event since three-time winner Manus Kelly died in a crash in 2019. Previous incidents include an 18-year-old spectator's death in 2008, which also led to the cancellation of the rally, and the deaths of two marshals in 2002. The last spectator fatality at a Motorsport Ireland-sanctioned event was in 2012 at the Cavan Stages Rally, where two spectators died.
