Humber Rescue, a lifeboat charity based at Hessle Foreshore, has issued a warning after two teenage boys were spotted wading into the River Humber on Sunday. The organisation took to social media to caution against swimming in the river, citing dangers such as strong currents, deep channels, and rapidly changing conditions. These hazards can quickly turn what seems like harmless fun into a life-threatening situation, according to Humber Rescue.
The warning comes after the death of 15-year-old Declan Sawyer, who died at Swanholme Lakes near Lincoln in May. With hot temperatures forecast for this week, Humber Rescue fears that people may be tempted to cool off in the river, despite its extreme cold. Cold water shock is a significant risk, as the organisation points out that the river remains extremely cold.
Welton Waters Activities Centre, near Brough, has also issued a warning about the dangers of mixing swimming with alcohol. They have seen groups of young people gathering on the east bank of the lake, and are urging caution. 'There have been tragic incidents in other parts of the country and we absolutely do not want to see anything like that happen here,' said a spokesperson for the centre.
Humberside Fire and Rescue has also issued a warning about the dangers of entering cold water on a hot day. 'Don't let others talk you into it. Open water is unpredictable, cold and has hidden dangers – it's not worth the risk,' the organisation said.
