The latest incident in a spate of arson attacks across North Yorkshire has left a local farmer counting the cost of £30,000 in damages after a field near York was set alight on Sunday afternoon. The rapid spread of the fire, which occurred at approximately 3:30 PM BST on Askham Lane in Acomb, raised concerns about the safety of nearby residents and motorists.
North Yorkshire Police confirmed that two teenage girls, aged 15 and 17 from the local area, were arrested on suspicion of arson shortly after the incident. The arrest follows a weekend marred by eight reported fires across the region, with six of these cases currently being treated as deliberate. These incidents have sparked alarm among authorities, who are urging residents to remain vigilant.
Local farm contractor Cameron Bartram played a crucial role in mitigating the spread of the Askham Lane fire. Alongside his friend Jay Loft, Bartram utilised his tractor to create a vital fire break, highlighting the severity of the dry conditions that made the land susceptible to ignition. He expressed solidarity with the affected farmer and underscored the community spirit prevalent in rural areas during such crises.
North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service (NYFRS) has issued a stern warning about the unpredictable nature and rapid spread of flames, even from seemingly small ignitions. Nick Allenby from NYFRS stressed that such incidents divert critical resources from potentially life-threatening emergencies. The fire service has now appealed directly to parents and guardians, urging them to engage in discussions with young people about the serious risks and severe consequences of starting fires, especially as the summer holidays approach.
