A devastating arson attack on a farmer's field near York has left a trail of destruction worth £30,000 and highlighted the dangers of reckless behaviour in rural areas. Two boys and two girls, all 14 years old, were arrested on Friday in connection with the incident, which occurred last Sunday afternoon at approximately 3:30 PM BST.
The fire, which emergency services were called to quickly contain, is believed to have been started using a lighter and spread rapidly due to windy conditions. Fortunately, local residents played a crucial role in bringing the blaze under control before the North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service arrived on the scene.
Cameron Bartram, 19, a farm contractor who was nearby with his friend Jay Loft, used their tractor to create a firebreak, limiting the damage and preventing further spread of the fire. Mr Bartram praised the quick-thinking actions of his friends and neighbours, saying that he felt relieved to be in a position to assist.
Sgt Ben Ambler commended Mr Bartram's bravery and quick thinking, stating that their actions undoubtedly minimised the extent of the damage. The dry conditions on the field made it highly susceptible to rapid combustion, making the swift response all the more critical.
Four teenagers have been arrested in connection with this incident, while two other girls, aged 15 and 17, who were previously questioned, are no longer suspected but remain under investigation for a separate fire reported on the same evening.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks posed by arson attacks to rural communities and the importance of swift action in preventing further damage. The arrested teenagers will be taken through the legal process, while the community continues to come together to support those affected by this devastating event.
