The streets of Glasgow's St George's Cross area have been left reeling after the brutal murder of 15-year-old Amen Teklay, a case that has now gone to trial with two teenagers aged 16 and 17 standing accused. On 5 March 2023, what began as an altercation in broad daylight turned deadly, leaving Amen with fatal injuries on Clarendon Street.
Prosecutors have alleged that the masked teenagers brandished a sword and a frying pan before chasing Amen, striking him with the sword and causing severe harm. The court heard that the 16-year-old accused had prior confrontations with Amen, including an alleged attack on Great Western Road just days earlier, where Amen was punched and kicked by the 16-year-old and two other named individuals.
Further accusations suggest the 16-year-old was threatening and abusive to Amen three days before the fatal incident, brandishing a sword and metal barrier while shouting and swearing. The 17-year-old co-accused, meanwhile, is also facing charges related to the murder. As part of the prosecution's case, mobile and CCTV footage has been presented to jurors showing various confrontations between Amen and the accused youths in the weeks leading up to his death.
A joint minute of agreed evidence revealed that Amen received emergency medical treatment on Clarendon Street before being pronounced dead at 22:48. A black and grey zombie-style knife, a green knife sheath, and a frying pan were recovered from the scene, with the trial expected to continue until July.
