A tragic fire in Lima, Peru, has claimed the lives of ten members of the same family, including five children, police have confirmed. The devastating blaze tore through their residence in the southern La Victoria district in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
Among the victims were five children, aged between three and 15 years old, alongside four adults ranging from 29 to 72. The age of a fifth adult victim was not immediately released. Two other individuals reportedly sustained injuries in the incident. Seventeen family members were in the property when the fire erupted at approximately 03:00 local time, but seven managed to escape.
Peruvian National Police General Oscar Arriola stated that the bodies were severely burned, making identification challenging. The National Police of Peru issued a statement expressing the nation's grief, saying, "Today, all of Peru falls silent in the face of a tragedy that plunges our nation into mourning."
Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the fire, with significant focus on reports of arson. Local media outlets have suggested that the family, who were involved in manufacturing mattresses and owned electric motorcycles, had previously received threats and demands for extortion payments. Neighbours reportedly told the Andina news agency that unknown individuals had set fire to motorcycles parked outside the property, with the flames rapidly spreading to the highly flammable mattress-making materials inside the home.
This incident highlights the severe impact of crime and extortion on communities, particularly in areas where organised groups may operate.
