Millions of Thameslink passengers are set to experience more comfortable commutes as publicly owned operator GTR partners with Siemens Mobility to upgrade standard class seat cushions. The overhaul will affect all 115 trains in its fleet, with installation beginning next year.
Over 60,000 new spring and memory foam cushions will be rolled out, alongside improved winged backrests. These will replace the existing seats, which have been described as 'ironing-board' seats. The upgrades are part of a pre-existing contract and will come at no additional cost to taxpayers.
Passengers can view a new seat design at London Bridge station on Thursday 10 and Friday 11 September 2026. The new design offers up to 57% more 'give' than current cushions and includes new 'wing' backrests for better shoulder and head support. First class seats will also receive the improved cushions, and seat-back tables will be added to 69 trains that currently lack them.
The installation process for the new cushions and tables will commence in 2027 and is planned to be phased over two years to avoid disrupting services. This is part of an 11-year fleet overhaul delivered in collaboration with Siemens.
