The Maccabees served up a masterclass in musical matchmaking on Monday, July 6, as they unveiled a tantalising new track, 'Ballad Of So Long', at an electrifying gig at Edinburgh's Corn Exchange. It was the perfect primer for their long-awaited summer 2026 outdoor tour – and what a sweet teaser it proved to be!
Frontman Orlando Weeks broke the ice with a sly wink: "Would anyone like to hear a new song? OK, just remember this is the first time, it’s like introducing a new person. Be polite – you don’t have to be super friendly, they’re new to the party." The track itself was an earworm of a 'warm, slow-burner', featuring a 'twinkling lead guitar motif' and Weeks' 'quietly passionate vocals', with a poignant refrain that had hearts melting: "I loved you so much."
The appearance of 'Ballad Of So Long' has turned up the volume on fan speculation about potential new music from The Maccabees. It was one of two unfamiliar titles spotted in a rehearsal post by the band last month, alongside another song titled 'She', sparking widespread chatter that they might be gearing up to release new material after their hiatus.
The Edinburgh show was a triumph, blending fan favourites like 'Love You Better', 'Latchmere', and 'Toothpaste Kisses' with the new addition. The encore featured an emotional rendition of 'Pelican' – a fitting finale to an unforgettable night. Tonight, July 7, they're off to Newcastle's O2 City Hall, before heading to London's Alexandra Palace Park on July 9, followed by further dates across the UK, including The Eden Sessions in Cornwall and Truck Festival.
Speaking previously about their reunion shows, Weeks expressed his pure joy: "These are my favourite memories of playing with Maccs" – a testament to the band's enduring bond. He also acknowledged the challenges of geographical separation but hinted that these current shows might be just the catalyst they need to create something new and special.
The Maccabees' last studio album, 'Marks to Prove It', was released in 2015, topping the UK Albums Chart and earning a Mercury Prize nomination. Their return has been met with widespread enthusiasm from fans and critics alike – previous reunion gigs have sold out in record time, with recent highlights including contributing their 2009 track 'No Kind Words' to War Child’s Secret 7” record auction and performing at Harry Styles’ Meltdown festival.
