Ahead of the blockbuster's release, production designer Ruth De Jong spoke to Traveller about the challenges and triumphs of scouting and filming in various locations. De Jong and her team wanted to create a world that was diverse and rich in culture, while also adhering to the classic Mediterranean appearance of ancient Greece. To achieve this, they looked beyond the expected locales and shot in Morocco, Iceland, and Scotland, as well as Greece and Italy.
In Greece, the cast and crew spent a month filming scenes in Odysseus's ancestral home, including his unfortunate adventure into the Cyclops Polyphemus's cave. The homecoming of Agamemnon to Clytemnestra was shot outside at Methoni Castle in Messinia, while Telemachus's visit to Sparta took place in an olive grove in Messinia. The team also filmed scenes in Athens at the monolithic Acrocorinth, taking advantage of the windy conditions to create a sense of drama and tension.
In Italy, the island of Favignana off the coast of Sicily stood in for Ithaca, with the 15th-century castle of Santa Caterina providing the perfect backdrop for the film's epic landscapes. De Jong had previously visited Favignana a decade ago and remembered its beauty while scouting for locations. The team shot on the island in the off-season, when the crowds were smaller and the landscape was even more breathtaking.
