'The Shards', a new ten-part series created by Ryan Murphy, is now available to stream on Disney+. The show is based on Bret Easton Ellis's 2023 meta-memoir and offers a highly fictionalised account of his senior high school year in 1981 Los Angeles.
The series, which Murphy also directed the opening episode for, is set against the backdrop of 1980s Los Angeles, an era described as having serial killers like Ted Bundy, Richard Ramirez, and John Wayne Gacy. Igby Rigney plays Bret, with Homer Gere as newcomer Robert Mallory, and Kaia Gerber as Susan.
The show explores themes of paranoia as Bret questions Robert Mallory's true identity and potential connection to a murderous spree in the city. The production features 1980s music, including tracks by The Stranglers, Duran Duran, and Ultravox.
