A private ambulance worker-turned-ice cream man, James Shemmeld, has shed light on the often-misunderstood world of ice cream sales. In an exclusive interview, he shared the pricing secrets behind his colourful treats and revealed how often he treats himself to a favourite flavour.
Shemmeld, who now runs his own ice cream van in a popular UK seaside town, explained that pricing is influenced by various factors, including production costs, competition, and the target audience. 'As a small business owner, I need to balance my prices to ensure I'm earning a decent income while still attracting customers,' he said.
However, it's not all about the money. Shemmeld confessed that he does allow himself the occasional treat, usually after a long day of work. 'I love a good salted caramel ice cream cone – it's my indulgence,' he smiled. But, he warned that overindulging in his own products can lead to a 'sweet tooth' overload.
According to the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidelines, excessive sugar consumption can lead to health problems, including obesity and type 2 diabetes. Shemmeld stressed the importance of moderation and responsible ice cream sales practices.
In the UK, the ice cream market is a growing industry, with sales projected to reach £650 million by 2025 (Source: Euromonitor International). As a small business owner, Shemmeld is well aware of the market trends and strives to stay competitive.
