Police have named the three teenagers who died after a car they were in entered the River Wear in Sunderland. Jackson Duke, 17, Luke Etheridge, 16, and Zara Shaw, 16, were identified by Northumbria Police.
The force stated that a black Audi A3 came off the road at Panns Bank near Wearmouth Bridge and went into the water just before 13:30 BST on Tuesday. Four people were in the car at the time.
A 17-year-old boy who managed to reach safety has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. Police said the investigation into the circumstances, including who was driving, is ongoing.
Jackson and Luke were from Sunderland, while Zara was from Houghton-le-Spring. Sunderland College confirmed the three were students and expressed their sadness at the loss.
