The UK is bracing itself for a chaotic overnight period as the Met Office issues a widespread yellow weather warning for thunderstorms and torrential rain, affecting 106 locations across the country. The warning comes into effect this evening and extends into the early hours of tomorrow morning, with forecasters predicting intense downpours and lightning that could lead to localised flooding.
Forecasters warn that commuters and those planning to travel late tonight or early tomorrow morning can expect challenging driving conditions, with reduced visibility and potential surface water on roads. There is also a risk of power cuts in some areas due to lightning strikes or heavy rainfall affecting infrastructure. The regions expected to bear the brunt of the activity include the North West, Midlands, South East, Scotland's central and southern areas, Wales, particularly eastern parts, and Northern Ireland.
England's North West, including Greater Manchester and parts of Lancashire, is forecast to receive up to 30-40mm of rain in a short space of time. Temperatures are generally expected to remain mild overnight, ranging between 12°C and 16°C, but the sudden onset of heavy rain and strong winds could bring a noticeable drop in perceived temperature.
Wind gusts of up to 30-40 mph are possible in exposed areas during the peak of the storms. The Met Office advises residents in affected areas to take precautions: secure loose garden furniture or items, avoid walking or driving through floodwater, and be mindful of potential lightning risks. It is also recommended to check local weather updates before travelling and to consider postponing non-essential journeys if conditions are severe.
