The Met Office has sounded the alarm for 15 UK regions bracing for potentially treacherous thunderstorms that could bring widespread disruption. From Tuesday afternoon, residents in these areas will face a risk of flash flooding, power outages and severe travel delays as heavy rain, lightning and strong gusts sweep across the country.
Among those at risk are parts of England's South West, South East, East of England and Midlands, with Bristol, Birmingham and Norwich likely to be affected. Scotland's central belt and Highlands will also face these conditions, while Wales sees warnings for its southern and central regions – including Cardiff and Swansea – and Northern Ireland has alerts in place for counties Antrim and Down.
With up to 30mm of rain forecasted in just an hour, the Met Office warns that surface water flooding could be intense, impacting homes and businesses. Drivers will also face hazardous conditions with reduced visibility and standing water on roads. The risk of lightning strikes causing damage is another concern, as well as potential power cuts.
The public should take precautions: secure loose outdoor items, drive with caution and allow extra time for journeys. If possible, avoid unnecessary travel during the peak of the storms. In case of a power cut, residents should contact their energy provider for updates.
