The Met Office has sounded the alarm with a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms sweeping across South Wales, prompting residents to prepare for potential chaos throughout the afternoon and early evening today, Sunday 2nd June. The warning comes into effect at 12:00 BST and will remain in place until 21:00 BST.
Eight counties in South Wales are under threat from the severe weather: Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion, Monmouthshire, Neath Port Talbot, Pembrokeshire, Rhondda Cynon Taf, Swansea, Torfaen, and the Vale of Glamorgan. Forecasters warn that while the main focus is on South Wales, isolated pockets elsewhere could also be affected.
Expect heavy downpours with some areas potentially seeing 20-30mm of rain in a short period, and up to 40-50mm in a few hours. The storms will bring lightning, hail, and strong gusty winds, making it feel muggy in the affected regions with temperatures reaching around 18-20°C.
The main concerns are localised flooding in low-lying areas or those prone to poor drainage, disrupting travel with surface water and reduced visibility causing problems on roads. Public transport services may be delayed or cancelled, while there's a risk of power cuts and damage from lightning strikes or strong winds.
The Met Office advises taking precautions such as securing loose garden furniture, avoiding flooded areas, and being aware of surroundings. If planning outdoor activities, check the latest forecasts before heading out and have a plan for seeking shelter if storms develop. Drivers should slow down and maintain a greater distance from the vehicle in front.
