The final set featured multiple breaks and shifts in momentum, culminating in Tiafoe's victory in a 10-point tie-break.

This win marks Tiafoe's third US Open semi-final appearance in five years. He will now face either defending champion Carlos Alcaraz or American eighth seed Ben Shelton. Michelsen, competing in his first Grand Slam quarter-final, was reportedly in tears after the four-hour and 38-minute match.
