A set of three Copeland Spode demitasse saucers, originally intended for first-class passengers on the RMS Titanic, have been sold at auction for £46,800. The items, bearing the gilt monogram for the Oceanic Steam Navigation Company, were sold by Cambridge-based auctioneers Cheffins.
The saucers, which are blue, white, and gold, never made it onto the White Star Line ship before its maiden voyage in April 1912. Cheffins had initially estimated the items would sell for between £1,000 and £2,000.
Tony Probst, a 67-year-old Californian collector, purchased the saucers. He stated his mission is to collect every piece of R4332 china he can find, describing it as the rarest pattern in his collection.
