Todd Boehly and fellow investor Mark Walter have exited their investment in Chelsea, with US private equity firm Clearlake Capital now holding full control of the club. This move follows Wednesday night’s confirmation that Clearlake Capital has bought out Boehly and Walter.
Clearlake Capital, founded by Behdad Eghbali and José E Feliciano, was already the majority owner and guiding force at Chelsea. Boehly and Walter, alongside Swiss billionaire Hansjörg Wyss, previously held an equal share of a 38.5% stake, but their influence had reportedly diminished since the BlueCo consortium acquired Chelsea in 2022.
The departure of Boehly and Walter is not anticipated to change the day-to-day operations, leadership, or strategy at Stamford Bridge. However, their exit could potentially lead to movement regarding the club's stadium plans.
Boehly had previously served as interim sporting director and was the public face of the takeover. Clearlake sources indicate that important lessons have been absorbed this year, with last summer's business showing improvement, including the appointment of manager Xabi Alonso and the signing of established talent.
