British actor Tom Holland has commenced an intensive training regimen for his highly anticipated Fred Astaire biopic, a project that has been in development since 2021. Holland, known for his role as Spider-Man, shared insights into the demanding preparation, stating his ambition to execute all dance sequences personally and film them in single takes, paying homage to Astaire's iconic performance style.
Speaking on Good Morning America, Holland revealed, "I did my first few rehearsals recently, and it both filled me with excitement and absolute dread because I’ve got so much work to do to try and do Fred proud." This commitment to authenticity underscores the significant challenge he has set for himself, aiming to emulate Astaire, widely considered one of the greatest dancers in cinematic history, who starred in over 30 musical films across a seven-decade career.
Holland's journey into dance began as a child, inspired by a Janet Jackson song that led his mother to enrol him in dance classes. These formative experiences eventually paved the way for his starring role in Billy Elliot: The Musical, a pivotal moment that secured him an agent and launched his acting career. He recently expressed regret over ceasing regular dance training after Billy Elliot, making his return to the dance studio for the Astaire film a deeply personal and fulfilling endeavour.
The biopic, produced by Amy Pascal, first made headlines in 2021 when Holland confirmed his casting. The announcement drew varied reactions, with some praising the choice while others recalled Astaire's reported reluctance to be the subject of a biographical film. Currently, Holland is also starring as Telemachus in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, which premiered on 17 July, and is set to reprise his role as Peter Parker in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, scheduled for release on 31 July.
