Tomb Raider: Catalyst Game Release Delayed Until 2028

The highly anticipated new Tomb Raider game, Catalyst, has been quietly pushed back to a 2028 release. This follows an earlier delay for the remake, Tomb Raider: Legacy Of Atlantis, now scheduled for early 2027.

  • Tomb Raider: Catalyst is now slated for release in 2028.
  • Tomb Raider: Legacy Of Atlantis remake was previously delayed to February 12, 2027.
  • Both games will feature the voice of acclaimed actress Alix Wilton Regan as Lara Croft.
  • No specific reasons have been given for either delay.

Fans eager for new adventures with Lara Croft will need to exercise further patience, as the brand new game, Tomb Raider: Catalyst, has been quietly delayed until 2028. This marks the second significant postponement for the iconic franchise, following an earlier announcement that the remake of the original adventure, Tomb Raider: Legacy Of Atlantis, would also be pushed back.

Initially, Crystal Dynamics, the developers behind the games, had outlined plans for a 2026 release for Legacy Of Atlantis, with Catalyst following in 2027. These ambitious timelines were unveiled at The Game Awards last December. However, last month, the studio confirmed that Tomb Raider: Legacy Of Atlantis would instead launch on 12th February 2027. No official reason was provided for this initial change.

The latest update confirms the further delay for Catalyst. Speaking to The Game Business, Jeffrey Gattis, Amazon's head of gaming, confirmed the revised schedule. "We’ve obviously announced the two Tomb Raider titles: Atlantis comes 12th February next year and then we’ll follow on in 2028 with the next one," Gattis stated. As with the previous delay, no specific reasons have been publicly disclosed for the shift in Catalyst's release date.

Tomb Raider: Catalyst is described as a bold new direction for the series, featuring Lara Croft on an expedition across Northern India. The narrative centres around a mythical cataclysm that has unearthed ancient secrets and awakened mysterious forces. Lara will find herself in a race against other treasure hunters to uncover the truth and prevent a catastrophe, navigating a world where ancient and modern collide.

Both upcoming games will feature acclaimed actress Alix Wilton Regan lending her voice to the character of Lara Croft. Beyond the video games, a live-action adaptation of Tomb Raider is also in development at Amazon Prime Video, with Sophie Turner cast as Lara Croft. Turner recently commented that her portrayal would focus on the character's story and motivations, moving away from a "sex bombshell" image and highlighting her capabilities.

Why this matters: For millions of UK gamers, particularly long-time fans of the Tomb Raider series, these delays mean a longer wait for new content. It also highlights the common challenges and complexities involved in large-scale video game development.

What this means for you: If you are a fan of the Tomb Raider series, you will need to wait longer than expected to play the new games.
