Tommy Fleetwood's challenge for a first PGA Tour title on American soil unravelled in the final round of the Memorial Tournament, as the Englishman slipped from a one-shot lead to finish fourth. The Southport golfer, who had been in commanding form through three rounds, could only manage a two-over-par 74 on Sunday, leaving him seven under par for the tournament. American JT Poston seized the opportunity, carding a three-under 69 to win at 14 under par at Muirfield Village in Dublin, Ohio.
Fleetwood's final round was marred by three bogeys and a double bogey on the 11th, and he was unable to recover with only two birdies. Poston, meanwhile, held his nerve with a steady back nine, finishing one stroke clear of Sweden's Ludvig Åberg and New Zealand's Ryan Fox, who tied for second. The victory is Poston's third on the PGA Tour and his first since the 2022 John Deere Classic.
The tournament was heavily affected by persistent thunderstorms across the weekend, forcing organisers to extend play into Monday. The delays disrupted the rhythm of many players, but Fleetwood insisted conditions were not an excuse. 'It's disappointing, but JT played great and deserved to win,' Fleetwood said afterwards. 'I just didn't have my best stuff when it mattered most.'
Fleetwood, currently ranked 18th in the world, has now recorded three top-five finishes in his last six PGA Tour starts but is still searching for his first victory in the United States. He remains a perennial contender in majors and is expected to feature prominently at next month's Open Championship at Royal Troon, where he finished tied second in 2019.
The result moves Poston to a career-high world ranking of 20th. For Fleetwood, the focus now shifts to the Scottish Open in July, where he will look to fine-tune his game ahead of the final major of the season. Source: PGA Tour.
