As professional golfer Tommy Fleetwood, aged 35, returns to his hometown of Southport, Merseyside, to compete in The 154th Open Championship, those who nurtured his early talent are reflecting on his remarkable journey. His former coach, Norman Marshall, and drama teacher, Erica May, have shared memories of the young Fleetwood, revealing a driven and naturally gifted individual.
Marshall, who began coaching Fleetwood at Formby Hall when he was just six years old, described him as "pretty spectacular". By the age of eight, Fleetwood was already holding his own against older junior players, a rare feat at the time. Marshall attributes this rapid development to Fleetwood's profound passion for the sport, bordering on obsession. He recalled Fleetwood's dedication to practice, often hitting balls at the golf range throughout the winter, regardless of the weather, alongside his father.
Despite his early promise, Fleetwood's first tournament at age seven saw him finish last. Marshall explained that Fleetwood was competing in a category designed for much older teenagers, playing off significantly further back tees. However, this early setback did not deter him. Marshall remembers Fleetwood returning to the course the very next week, demonstrating the resilience and determination that would define his career. He characterised the young Fleetwood as quiet but confident, possessing a steady, calm, and mature demeanour.
Away from the golf course, Fleetwood's former drama teacher, Erica May, also remembers his impressive abilities. May, who taught a 14-year-old Fleetwood at Scarisbrick Hall School, stated that he was "very, very talented" and could have pursued a career in acting had he not dedicated himself to golf. She humorously recalled his initial reluctance to do homework, preferring to focus solely on golf. Despite this, Fleetwood eventually earned an A-star in his drama GCSE, albeit with the caveat that he was "only doing it for you, you know".
For Marshall, seeing Fleetwood win The Open title at Royal Birkdale, a course just a stone's throw from his home, would represent the "pinnacle of my career as a coach." He acknowledged the immense pressure on Fleetwood but stressed that the golfer has already achieved success in life through his character traits. Fleetwood has amassed an impressive list of achievements, including three Ryder Cup victories for Europe and an Olympic silver medal for Great Britain, playing alongside some of the sport's biggest names.
