Tonga's netball team has achieved a remarkable turnaround, rising to 8th in the world rankings in just 12 years. Under the leadership of CEO Salote Sisifa and head coach Jaqua Pori-Makea-Simpson, the team has faced numerous challenges, including a devastating volcanic eruption and pandemic. Despite these setbacks, Tonga has demonstrated resilience and determination, securing a top 10 spot in the world rankings.
The team's journey began when Sisifa took over as CEO in 2014, with no team, coach, or training facilities. She vowed to make significant changes within five years, and if not, she would resign. With the support of the national governing body, Sisifa recruited players, including star shooter Uneeq Palavi, who was persuaded to join by her Tongan grandmother.
The team's progress has been impressive, with silver medals at the Pacific Games and a jump from 42nd to 19th in the world rankings. However, the path to Glasgow for the Commonwealth Games has not been easy, with the team facing numerous challenges, including a volcanic eruption, tsunami, and pandemic lockdown. Despite these obstacles, Tonga is now ready to take on the world's best teams, including Australia, in their first Commonwealth Games campaign.
