Senior Conservative Chris Philp has announced plans to remove judges' powers in asylum appeals, sparking widespread criticism from refugee groups and lawyers. According to Philp, a Conservative government would quit the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) and abolish the judicial tribunal system used by claimants to appeal against deportations.

Instead, immigration decisions would be made by the Home Office, with migrants allowed an internal appeal. This proposal has been met with outrage from human rights advocates, who argue that it would strip asylum seekers of crucial safeguards against wrongful deportation.
