Tottenham Hotspur's summer of ambition has just gained an extra gear, with reports emerging that the North London giants are making a serious bid for West Ham United's Mateus Fernandes. The 21-year-old Portugal international is being eyed as the perfect midfield maestro to bring some much-needed energy and flair to Spurs' engine room.
Fernandes has been on Tottenham's radar for some time, but it seems they've finally mustered the courage to make a significant offer – understood to be around £80 million. West Ham, however, won't let him go without a fight, with sources indicating they're holding out for an even higher fee. The 21-year-old has also been linked with other European heavyweights, including Manchester United and Paris St-Germain, which suggests the market is heating up.
But what about their reported bid for Newcastle United's Sandro Tonali? Well, it seems that one was swiftly rejected by the Magpies. Spurs' manager Roberto de Zerbi has long been an admirer of his compatriot, but a new four-year contract extension at St James' Park has put paid to any hopes of a summer reunion.
Despite this setback, Tottenham have been busy in the transfer market, signing no fewer than four new players to bolster their squad. They've snapped up veteran goalkeeper Martin Dubravka on a free transfer from Burnley, while also securing Marcos Senesi and Andy Robertson – both on free transfers from Bournemouth and Liverpool respectively. And just this week, they landed Dutch defender Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton in a reported £52 million deal.
So what does Fernandes' potential signing say about Tottenham's ambitions? It seems they're determined to bring some much-needed dynamism to their midfield – and are willing to shell out big bucks to get it. The substantial asking price from West Ham suggests the Hammers won't let him go without a fight, but will Spurs be able to persuade them to change their minds?
