Tottenham Hotspur have significantly bolstered their defensive options with the acquisition of Dutch centre-back Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton in a deal worth £52 million. The 26-year-old has signed a long-term contract, becoming Spurs' third defensive signing of the summer transfer window as manager Roberto De Zerbi looks to overhaul his squad.
This move follows a challenging 2025-26 Premier League campaign for Tottenham, where they narrowly avoided relegation with a crucial final-day victory at home against Everton. De Zerbi, who joined Spurs and steered them through the latter stages of that season, previously managed Van Hecke for two seasons at Brighton, making the defender a primary target for his rebuild efforts at the North London club. After two initial bids were rejected, Tottenham's persistent pursuit ultimately secured the services of the highly-rated centre-back.
Van Hecke expressed his delight at the move, stating, "It’s a huge honour to become a Spurs player and when you join such a big club, it’s a dream come true. I already have a really strong connection with the head coach, who I’m looking forward to working with again." He also mentioned positive feedback from current Spurs player Micky van de Ven, adding to his anticipation. The defender will, however, not link up with his new team immediately as he is set to participate in the upcoming World Cup.
De Zerbi highlighted Van Hecke's qualities, remarking, "Jan Paul is someone I know very well from our time together at Brighton, and I’m delighted to be working with him again. He is a strong, intelligent centre-back who is brave in possession and plays with personality." The Italian manager also praised Van Hecke's maturity and hunger to improve, seeing him as a vital component for the team's intended playing style. This signing comes after Tottenham already secured left-back Andy Robertson and centre-back Marcos Senesi on free transfers, indicating a clear focus on strengthening a backline that conceded a concerning 122 goals over the last two league campaigns.
The club's majority owners, the Lewis family, have reportedly pledged to fund the necessary rebuild following two consecutive 17th-place finishes, a stark warning from De Zerbi that lessons must be learned. Van Hecke, who began his career with NAC Breda before joining Brighton in 2020, made his debut under De Zerbi in the 2022-23 season and has since established himself as one of the Premier League's standout ball-playing centre-backs.
