Among the prominent figures in the breakaway are Richard Carapaz, Lenny Martinez, Sepp Kuss, Quinn Simmons, and Tobias Johannessen. This group has been working cohesively to maintain an advantage, which at one point reached over three minutes, as they navigated the early climbs and descents. The peloton, however, has been diligently managed, primarily by UAE Team Emirates XRG, the team of current race leader Tadej Pogacar, who are keen to minimise any time losses.

Concerns have been raised regarding the health of some riders, with reports suggesting that members of UAE Team Emirates XRG, including Adam Yates, have been struggling with illness in recent days. This could impact their ability to support Pogacar fully on the demanding final climb. Despite this, the team has been relentless in their efforts at the front of the peloton, striving to keep the breakaway's lead in check.
As the race progresses, the focus now shifts squarely to the impending ascent of Alpe d'Huez. The iconic climb, renowned for its 21 hairpin bends and fervent crowds, is expected to be the decisive battleground for the stage victory. With approximately 29.5km remaining, the breakaway group, now reduced to 15 riders, will be acutely aware that their advantage needs to be substantial to hold off any late attacks from the favourites.
