Toxicologist Testifies on Medications in Lindsay Clancy Murder Trial

The trial of Lindsay Clancy, a Massachusetts mother accused of killing her three children in January 2023, continued on Wednesday with testimony from a forensic toxicologist.

Justin Brower, a forensic toxicologist with NMS Laboratories, testified that his lab examined the levels of four psychiatric medications in Clancy’s blood. These included the antidepressants mirtazapine and trazodone, the mood stabilizer lamotrigine, and quetiapine, a drug used for conditions such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.

Brower stated that only quetiapine appeared slightly elevated, but not at a “toxic concentration” or “suicidal concentration.” He added that the toxicology results “don’t tell the entire story.”

Prosecutors allege Clancy acted intentionally when her children, Callan (eight months), Dawson (three), and Cora (five), died. Her defense team contends she was a loving mother overwhelmed by postpartum psychosis, had undiagnosed bipolar disorder, and was on problematic medications.

The court has previously heard excerpts from Clancy’s journals detailing her mental struggles, including thoughts of suicide and feeling overwhelmed by motherhood.
