The UK tour of Trainspotting The Musical has been cancelled, with poor ticket sales cited as the reason. The stage adaptation of Irvine Welsh's novel, which premiered in July this year at London's Theatre Royal Haymarket, will conclude its West End run as planned but will not embark on its scheduled tour.
A production spokesperson confirmed the cancellation, stating that the tour, which was due to begin on 19 October, was affected by the current economic climate resulting in lower than expected ticket sales. Cast members also confirmed the news, with Keiran Brown, resident director and cast member, noting on Facebook that sales were not strong enough, even in Edinburgh.
The musical was directed and developed by Caroline Jay Ranger, with music and lyrics provided by Welsh and Stephen McGuinness. The West End run is scheduled to continue until 5 September. Ticketholders for the cancelled tour will be contacted by their point of purchase for full refund details.
